Project Overview - Web Coverage Services

Jump straight to Implementation Pages -> Coverage Development

Executive Summary

Scientific communities have been capturing and storing data for analysis and comparison over a broad time period. This data is not easily made available amongst the communities due in large part due to its sheer size and transferring data is cumbersome and usually not automated. The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Coverage Service Interface Standard (WCS) provides an interface to allow requests for geographical coverages across the web using platform-independent calls. This document will discuss the use of OGC Web Coverage Service in the Spatial Information Service Stack (SISS) and its implementation details.

Project Overview

The Web Coverage Service facilitates querying and retrieval of coverages. The Spatial Information Service Stack provides solutions to various scientific communities on how to setup a coverage service for their data.

Problem Definition

Scientific data is captured and stored differently by various scientific communities. More often than not, there is no simple way of retrieving data from different types of data servers. Requests made to these servers may vary and the returned data may be in different formats. Interoperable use of multiple datasets of this type requires that the interface for accessing and retrieving and manipulating this data is standardized.

Project Scope

The PROJECT must include:

Key Features

The Project will deliver the following:

Must-have Should-have
  • Support for OGC WCS 1.0 and 1.1 specification.
  • Conversion of file types to a format supported by THREDDS/ERDDAP, reprojecting the coordinate system when necessary.
  • Manipulation of datasets, modifying, editing and inserting attributes.
Could-have
  • Support all file Common Data Model files.

Out of Scope Key Features

The Project will not deliver the following:
  • Provide a Coverage Service for non-gridded datasets.
  • Gridding of non-gridded datasets.

Stakeholders

The key stakeholders have been identified as:
Name Role
AuScope Community key end-user group
International Geoscience Community end-user group
