The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting

The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) is a low-barrier mechanism for repository interoperability. Service Provides can make OAI-PMH service requests to harvest metadata. OAI-PMH is a set of six verbs or services that are invoked within HTTP.

Making a OAI-PMH request

  • GetRecord - Requests a record in a specific metadata format from an item.
    • identifier - required - unique identifier of item in repository.
    • metadataPrefix - required - currently must be oai_dc.
  • ListIdentifiers - List Identifiers from a repository
  • ListRecords - Lists records from a repository
    • metadataPrefix - required - currently must be oai_dc.
    • from - optional - UTC datetime value for earliest time of interest.
    • until - optional - UTC datetime value for latest time of interest.
    • set - optional - the identifier of the set (read Dspace collection) whose records are of interest.
    • resumptionToken - exclusive - flow control token returned by previous request that returned an incomplete list.
  • ListMetadataFormats - Retrieve the metadata formats available from a repository
    • identifier - optional - unique identifier of item in repository for which available metadata formats are to be listed.
  • ListSets - Retrieve the set structure of a repository
    • resumptionToken - exclusive - flow control token returned by previous request that returned an incomplete list.
