Registering WFS/WMS services for the AuScope portal

Contents

Overview

The AuScope portal is currently using GeoNetwork as a feature service catalog.

There are two GeoNetwork installations in use by the AuScope portal:

Testing services will have to be registered on the testing GeoNetwork first, before going into production.

Autoharvesting configuration

Autoharvesting simplifies the process of adding a new service to the catalog as well as updating the records on a regular basis. Since version 2.3 the AuScope portal is using this feature to populate it's list of data sources.

  • Go to the GeoNetwork web interface (one of the links above).
  • Log in as admin.
  • Click on "Administration".
  • Click on "Harvesting management".
  • Click on "Add".
  • Choose "OGC Web services (ie. WMS, WFS, WCS, WPS)" and press "Add".
  • Go to "Groups", select "All" and press "Add".

Adding a WMS

  • Fill out the form as seen on the screenshot:

    autoharvest_wms.png

  • Click on "Save".

Adding a WFS

  • Fill out the form as seen on the screenshot:

    autoharvest_wfs.png

  • Click on "Save".

Adding a WCS

  • Fill out the form as seen on the screenshot:

    autoharvest_wcs.png

  • Click on "Save".

Linked or Overloaded Records

If you wish to link the WCS with an OPeNDAP or WMS representation, please read on.
  • Open up the copy of the harvesting record for editing.
  • Tick the checkbox that says "One run only"
  • Click on "Save".
  • Tick the "Select" checkbox of your service and click "Run".
  • After a while you can click on "Refresh" and check the "Status" and "Errors" icons (mouse over them)
  • Now for every metadata that was harvested you will need to manually link WMS / OPeNDAP URLs by doing the following
    • Edit the newly added metadata record
    • Selected "Advanced View" -> By Package -> Distribution
    • [Optional] To link a WMS add a new Online Resource by clicking the small '+' icon next to the last OnLine resource
      • Set the URL to the WMS URL you wish to link
      • Set the Protocol to 'OGC Web Map Service v1.1.1'
      • Set the application profile name to the same application profile name that is linked to the WCS URL
      • Set the description to 'Manually Added'
    • [Optional] To link an OPeNDAP Service add a new Online Resource by clicking the small '+' icon next to the last OnLine resource
      • Set the URL to the root OPeNDAP URL you wish to link
      • Set the Protocol to 'Web Address (URL)' (Geonetwork doesn't natively support OPeNDAP so it is linked via a non standard method.
      • Set the application profile name to the same application profile name that is linked to the WCS URL
      • Set the description to this exact string 'HACK-OPENDAP'
    • Now save the changes to this record

Run harvesting and check status

  • Tick the "Select" checkbox of your service and click "Run".
  • After a while you can click on "Refresh" and check the "Status" and "Errors" icons (mouse over them):

Manually entering metadata records for WFS/WMS services (deprecated)

Before version 2.3 the AuScope portal consumed manually entered GeoNetwork records to discover web feature and map services. Described here are the steps that are necessary to enter a new service into the GeoNetwork catalog.

Fill out template

  • Go to GeoNetwork web interface (one of the links above).
  • Log in as Username admin, Password standard service password
  • Click on "New metadata"
  • Choose the Template: "Template for WMS service in ISO19139/119 TEST"
  • Click "Create"
  • Fill out data for the following groups (you can find them on the left side):
    • Metatada
    • Identification
    • Distribution
  • Click on "Save and close" when done and close the window.

Metadata

Fill the form as seen on the screenshot:

Identification

Fill the form as seen on the three screenshots:

Distribution

Fill the form as seen on the screenshot:

Set permissions

After finishing the previous step, you have to change the permissions of the newly created data record to be readable for everyone. Otherwise it won't be discovered by the CSW service!

  • Log into GeoNetwork as admin.
  • Enter the title of your record into the "What?" field and click "Search".
  • Locate your record and click on "Privileges".
  • Change it to the following values:

  • Click "Submit"
