Introduction

GeoSciML arose from the desire of BGS to have a generic GeoScience Markup Language for exchange of data over the web. At the time the XMML project already existed and had substantially progressed so we decided to sponsor that and use it as a foundation.

The namespace http://www.opengis.net/GeoSciML has been reserved for its use, and a RDDL directory is available at this URL. It is intended to make this namespace available for use by the CGIModel effort to create an interchange language in a "version 2".

However, the current version has so far been used by BGS to experiment with creating features for data that we wish to exchange over the web. This has included modifying the XMML Borehole model and the areas below.

The Geological Time Scale model that was formerly in the XMML namespace has recently been moved to the GeoSciML namespace as well.
